One of the most difficult areas I have overcoming is ableist language. So much of our language is imbued with terminology that are ableist slurs or oppressive words and part of being accessible and supporting diversity is avoiding this language. I still slip into this language, but I’m aware of it and I’m trying to change. What I really need is a pocket thesaurus (or an app) that helps me but until then, here’s some good resources to educate yourself about ableist language and slurs. I’ll add to this list over time as I find resources.
Autistic Hoya has a great post about Abelism and language.
Everyday Feminism’s post about alternatives to oppressive language.
